Welcome to the Department of Biochemistry
Welcome to the Department of Biochemistry, part of the King Saud University College of Science. The department was established in 1981 as one of the oldest Biochemistry departments in the Arab world. Biochemistry knowledge provides very important understanding of how living things are chemically constructed, what they contain, how they function and communicate, how they use food to obtain the building blocks and energy for growth, how genetic information is stored, expressed and passed on to the next generation, how enzymes catalyse reactions and how the cell's chemistry is co-ordinated and controlled.
Biochemistry is at the heart of the rapid and exciting advances in life sciences that have been one of mankind’s major achievements of the past 60 years – from understanding enzyme function to deciphering the structure of DNA to modern stem cell biology, genomics and recently the proteomic. Any aspect of living tissue that can be studied in terms of chemical and physical principles is a subject for biochemical investigation. Finally, we hope on these pages you enjoy reading more about our department staff, and academic and social activiteis.
