About Our Department
The biochemistry discipline studies life in all biological systems: human, animal, plant, and microorganisms, and viruses at the molecular level. This science interacts actively with related-sciences such as: chemistry, animal, plant, microbiology, medicine, pharmacy, and agriculture. Therefore, the Department of Biochemistry was established in 1981 to meet the increasing demand for this branch of science not only at the University level, but also at the national level. Initially the Department offered the B.Sc. Program only, but since 1987, the Department has been offering both B.Sc. and M.Sc. Programs.
Chairman's Message:
On behalf of myself and on behalf of my fellow faculty members and all male and female employees of the Department of Biochemistry at the College of Science at King Saud University, I welcome you to our website, as it is a platform for learning about the latest innovations and research in the field of biochemistry. Our department aims to develop knowledge and enhance scientific interaction in this exciting field. We also welcome bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral students who seek to discover the world of biochemistry and realize their full potential. We also open our doors to researchers and professionals who seek to cooperate with us in the field of research and development. We ensure the provision of an inspiring educational and research environment for our students and faculty members alike, and we work hard to provide study programs. Excellent, supported by well-equipped laboratories and wonderful research opportunities.
The Department of Biochemistry at the College of Science, King Saud University, was established in 1401 AH as one of the oldest departments of biochemistry in the Arab world. The science of biochemistry is extremely important as it provides concepts for knowing the chemical composition of living organisms, what they are made of, how they work and how they communicate with each other, how they benefit from food for construction and energy for the purpose of growth, how genetic information is stored and how it is translated and how it is transmitted to future generations, and how enzymes catalyze chemical reactions. Within an organism, and how cell chemistry is coordinated and regulated. Biochemistry presents concepts related to the study of living tissue in terms of chemical and physical fundamentals, and it is targeted in biochemical research. The science of biochemistry is considered at the heart of the rapidly developing and exciting sciences in the life sciences, which relate to the most important achievements of humanity in the past sixty years, starting with understanding the function of the enzyme, through knowing the structure of DNA, and more recently, the stem cell science system, the genetic map (genome), and finally the protein map. (Proteomics).
The department has obtained academic accreditation from the National Authority for Academic Evaluation and Accreditation and international academic accreditation from the German Institute ASIIN. We are proud to present a distinguished team of specialized and experienced faculty members in various fields of biochemistry who have won many scientific awards. Global and patents, our faculty members work to guide and assist students in their academic and research journey in addition to encouraging them to discover new fields and make their own contributions to the field.
The department also includes highly qualified technical and administrative staff and has a suitable infrastructure and laboratories equipped with modern technologies. The department also has a number of chairs and research groups with many distinguished researches in quantity and quality. The Department of Biochemistry seeks to provide very distinguished programs in education and research in The field of biochemistry to educate, train, enhance professional competence and develop scientific thinking among our students to provide the best service to society.
We seek to communicate with other research institutions and laboratories at the local and international levels with the aim of enhancing cooperation and exchanging knowledge and resources. We believe in the importance of partnerships and scientific cooperation in developing the field of biochemistry and achieving scientific progress.
