The Research Chair Program at KSU is a key element in promoting the transition of the Kingdom to a knowledge-based economy. Research Chairs at the king Saud University have the mission of developing scientific research and to generate the knowledge and to adapt it to contribute to the national development and the creation of a distinguished generation of researchers and graduate students. A step in this direction was the establishment of three research chairs at the Department namely the Water Resource Exploration Chair in the Empty Quarter (Rub al Khali), the Saudi Geological Survey Research Chair for Natural Hazards, and Abdullah Alrushaid Chair for Earth Science Remote Sensing Research
