About the Department of Physics and Astronomy
Physics holds a distinguished place in the structure of human thought, having led to remarkable practical developments in various fields. It is one of the oldest academic disciplines and the most prestigious of all natural sciences. This longevity stems from the significant importance of this science in everyday life. The Greek origin of the word "Physics" means the science of nature or natural sciences. Through this science, humans learn about natural phenomena, their causes, the laws of nature, and their implications, as well as how to benefit from or protect themselves from everything happening around them. Over the years, this science has evolved, and successive generations have come to realize its importance and role in advancing nations in all fields.
Due to the importance of physics, King Saud University, through the College of Science, launched the Bachelor's degree program in Physics and Astronomy in 1957. Since then, the efforts of the department's members have been focused on developing it to achieve its original goals. Today, the Department of Physics and Astronomy offers a Bachelor's degree in Physics as well as Master's and Ph.D. degrees.
The Department of Physics and Astronomy at King Saud University is staffed by distinguished faculty members who graduated from renowned universities. The department has adopted a curriculum that ensures a solid academic level, comparable to the standards of leading international institutions, with the aim of advancing scientific and research standards to address challenges and contribute to the development of various programs in environmental, economic, and social development. It is equipped with specialized research laboratories and modern learning resources to provide optimal education in a contemporary way.
Graduate studies include various physics tracks based on faculty research areas, including: materials science, environmental physics and renewable energy, laser and spectral physics, theoretical physics, nuclear physics, biophysical medical physics, quantum technology, and astronomy.
