About the Department of Statistics and Operations Research

The Department of Statistics and Operations Research holds special importance due to the significant role of its specialization in making optimal decisions for problems that arise in various fields such as industry, economics, trade, agriculture, transport, military, and more. The department also extends its educational services both inside and outside the university, offering statistics courses to students from the College of Science, Computer Science, Agriculture, Humanities, Education, and other colleges.

The department was established in 1979 (1399H) after being part of the Mathematics Department since the founding of the College of Science in 1967 (1387H). It rapidly developed during the few years following its establishment, starting with a Master's program in Statistics in 1980 (1400H). The number of students increased significantly, especially after the introduction of Operations Research in 1986 (1406H). The women's branch was established in 1988 (1408H) as a supporting department serving other departments in the College of Science and the university, offering both Master's and Ph.D. degrees. In 2019 (1440H), the Bachelor's degree in Statistics was introduced, making King Saud University the only public university in Riyadh to offer this degree to female students and the sixth university in the Kingdom.
