One of the oldest colleges at King Saud University, the College of Sciences was founded in 1378-1379 H. (corresponding to 1958/1959 A.D.) as the first scientific college in the Arabian Peninsula. It has ever since made great efforts to accompany the country's comprehensive progress in scientific, industrial and technological fields. Demands for the college were peerless and extended all expectations.
Progress of the College of Sciences was not merely numerical; it was also a genuinely scientific progress that took into consideration escorting the scientific advancement in Basic Sciences; hence, possibilities available for both instructors and students have increased noticeably. At the time when it was founded, the College of Sciences shared with the College of Arts the same building as well as the same lecture halls; its laboratories at the time did not exceed five in number, but now the College has its own independent building, the number of premises has gradually increased, and laboratories now number over seventy in different departments, in addition to many lecture halls and other academic premises.
Since its foundation, the College of Sciences has gone a long way in its progress and development. Indeed, the College is one of the educational institutions which provide the Kingdom with the required number of well-qualified graduates who will work in diverse academic and scientific fields such as universities, ministries, and companies. The College is also committed to giving its distinguished Saudi students grants to study abroad for Ph.D. degrees in order for them to join the faculty; many of them have indeed completed their studies and returned home to join different colleges of the university.
Since the establishment of the College, thousands of qualified students have graduated in different areas of specialization. The College has always prided itself on having designed in its teaching plans an essential scientific basis that enables students to acquire solid knowledge in their initial years of study and to gain advanced levels of knowledge of practical scientific nature in accordance with the student's area of specialization. In some departments, students spend their final year of study doing practical courses, while others receive training in courses that require field or laboratory practice. This would provide students with a high-standard qualification that would qualify them to work in their fields of specialization efficiently or to pursue their higher studies..
As concerns postgraduate studies, the College has taken gigantic steps in this field: all departments of the College offer Master degrees in various branches of science, and some departments also offer Ph. D. programs, as equipment and capabilities have reached a high level of excellence, and qualified faculty have also reached the required number. It is worth noting that postgraduate research projects focus on topics that deal with development and community service; the results of those projects have been published in specialized local and international journals, and this has earned the College great academic reputation. Many of the College's faculty took part in a number of local and international symposia and conferences and introduced their research projects which they had conducted in the college. Moreover, the College continuously receives invitations to take part in international conferences, which boosts its academic prestige.
